A step up from the IR Remote is the RF Remote -  This is more suitable for use outside where the sun overpowers IR remote controls or in multiple room situations. 

The remote does not have to be pointed in one precise location to work. All of the remotes mentioned above can be expanded with an RF extender to provide expanded functionality.

A good rule of thumb is to divide the stated range figure of any domestic RF device by four.  This will give a more realistic range expectation.  If in doubt borrow one or buy it on apro to try it first - store wont let you take one home?  you are not dealing with a CEDIA firm! www.cedia.com.au
